Google Maps provides various ways of displaying photography and drawings on its maps. One example is the early plats and old school photos shown on the Maps page of this website.

Another interesting technique is to display photographs on the Street View. A great website that demonstrates this feature is called WhatWasThere. It has a the ability to adjust the intensity of the old photo on the current display of a location to show what used to be there or how it looked in the old days compared to today.

I have uploaded a number of old photos from the Concordia area onto that site. You can view them at http://www.whatwasthere.com entering Concordia, MO in the search box. Scroll down the thumbnails of the photos on the left of the window and click on one of interest (for example 1920s Standard Oil Station). Then click on ‘Google Street View’ at the bottom of the window that pops up. Use the slider at the top of the photo fading it to – in order to see what is there now. (Note. If you have trouble entering Concordia, MO in the search bar, go to the 'Explore Photos' feature at the top of the page and zoom down in the map to Concordia.)

If you have some old interesting photos, you can upload them yourself or send a copy to me and I will be happy to add them.

Are you having trouble locating Concordia on the WhatWasThere.com website? For some reason, the website has a problem locating a city when you type the name into the searchbox. However, there is an alternate way to locate the city. Click on the 'explore photos' button in the tool bar near the top of the window. When the map appears drag it around until Missouri is in the center of the window, then slowly expand the map either by using the arrows at the bottom right of the window or using the wheel on your mouse, if you have one. Keep the area around Concordia in the center of the screen while you are expanding the map. You can locate the area by looking for the intersection of I-70 and Hgwy 23. When the pin for Concordia shows up move the mouse over the pin and the bar with the name of Concordia and number of photos should appear. Click on that bar and it should expand the map around Concordia with a listing of photos. Click on the photo you are interested in and it should appear in the window In the bar at the bottom of the photo, click on street view. In this mode, you will find a slider at the top of the photo which allows you to fade the photo in or out so you can see the location and what is there now.

Note. To view the photo of the old Standard Oil Station directly without all of the searching, click on the link in the next line

From there you can also look at other pictures in the list.
