A local artist in the Concordia area during the 1940s era was Walter Rosebrock. He was a sign painter by trade. If you needed an advertising sign, a name or company logo painted on a window or on the side of a delivery truck, call Walter.

Walter had a friendly, easy-going style while painting, explaining what he was doing. (Like the painters featured on public TV.) He was best known for his cartoons or “chalk talk”. He would start by drawing some familiar figures, then tell a story and begin connecting the figures until, at the end, he had magically combined them into a surprise picture that illustrated his story. He displayed his talent a various programs, such as the one mentioned at http://concordia-memories.org/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=121.

Walter was one of the people who would provide entertainment at parent-teacher meetings in various rural schoolhouses. I remember those presentations because I would often accompany my father to them when Dad showed movies. (Most frequently it was at the Ebenezer Schoolhouse west of Concordia when cousin Corde Runge was teaching there.) Dad would rent cartoons and movie comedies, like Laurel and Hardy, and show them on his home projector. The movies were always a bit hit. In the pre-TV era, people craved any visual entertainment.

Does anyone still have one of Walter's creations? It would be a suitable addition to the Concordia Area Museum.
