There were relatively few Klinkerman(n)s living in the Lafayette County area in the early years. Those that did live there had migrated to Missouri from Indiana rather than immigrating directly from Germany.

Some of you are familiar with Teacher Henry F. Klinkermann, who taught third and fourth grade at St. Paul's Elementary School in Concordia for a number of years. H. F. Klinkermann was born in Aurora, Dearborn Co., Indiana on 24 Nov. 1883 to cabinet maker John Fred Klinkermann (1857- ) and Mary “Sophie” (nee Bosse) Klinkermann (1858- ). H. F. married Alma Streckfuss, who was born 01 Mar1886 in Chicago to Rev. John Streckfuss (1855- ) and Amalia (nee Mennicke) Streckfuss (1864- ). Henry probably met Alma when he was studying at River Forest, just west of Chicago.)

Henry Klinkermann first taught in the Cleveland, Ohio area where their son Oscar was born in 1910. In 1923, he accepted a call to Concordia, where he then taught until he retired in 1954. Henry died on 15 May 1966 and Alma died on 17 July 1973. They are both buried in St. Paul's Cemetery, Concordia.

Another Klinkerman family that lived in Lafayette County was the William H. Klinkerman family. William was also born in Dearborn County, Indiana on 21 Jan 1863. He was the third of four children in the family of William Herman Frederich (a.k.a. Herman Fred William) Klinkerman (1835-1865) and Henriette Marie (nee Siekerman) Klinkerman (1839-1875). His siblings were Clara Elizabeth (1860-1926), Anna Kathrina Sophia (1861-1947), and Henry George (1865-1961). The family lived in a small community in the southwest part of Dearborn Co. known as Farmers Retreat. The tombstones of William’s parents and grandparents can all be found in St. Johns Lutheran Cemetery there.

William came to Lafayette Co., MO by 1887. His marriage license indicates that he was living in Corder when he was married to Catharine Marie Fricke on 07 Jul 1887 by Rev. Rohlfing of Trinity Lutheran Church, Alma. So he and Catherine apparently were members of the church in Alma. Catherine was born 15 Sep 1868 in Beardstown, Illinois, daughter of Herman Fricke (1840-1909) and Louisa (nee Oetgen) Fricke (1845-1910). The Fricke family had moved to Lafayette Co., MO between 1872 and 1876.

William and Catherine raised a large family of 12 children in Missouri, mostly in the Corder/Alma area although several of the later children’s births are listed as being in Ste. Genevieve and Saline counties. However, they then moved to Texas sometime between 1906 and 1908 (based on Wichita County, Texas records). There they gave birth to two more children. Wife Catherine died suddenly in 1911, but William's family continued to live in the Wichita County area.

On 27 Dec 1913, William then married a Russian-born widow Kathryn (nee Grass) Kuhn with five younger children of her own still living with her. Sometime before 1920, William, his second wife, and seven younger children of the combined family moved to Fresno, CA. After living there for a brief period, William died on 01 Nov 1920 but was buried in Clara,Texas with his first wife.

The older Klinkerman children had remained in Texas and the boys that went to California returned there later. Two of the older children had ties with Lafayette County. Son Albert had returned to Missouri to marry Emma Riesterer on 21 Jun 1914 in St. Paul's Church, Concordia. Also, daughter Henrietta (“Etta”) Ella Sophia Klinkerman married Wm. Carl Kuddes on 6 Aug 1916 in Wichita County, TX and moved back to Missouri with him. (Note that William was from Corder, MO where "Etta" was born.) The girls that went to California all returned to Missouri to be live with their sister Etta.

Albert Klinkerman’s wife Emma died quite young and left Albert with six young children. So Albert sent the three youngest (Helen Ruth, Kenneth, and Emmett) to Lafayette County to live with his sister Etta. Because it was difficult for Etta to raise all three of them, Helen Ruth and Kenneth were, in turn, placed in the home of Albert and Etta’s cousin Mollie (nee Frerking) and her husband John Klingenberg.

In spite of the various moves and some early deaths, the Klinkerman family remained a close-knit group. They continued to maintain contact between those that lived in Texas and those in Missouri. A large number of them are buried in a family plot in the Clara Cemetery, Wichita County, TX. More information about the William H. Klinkerman family through the years is documented in the following file: Klinkerman Family Trace.

I do not know whether H. F. Klinkermann and William H. Klinkerman were related. Both of the families lived in Dearborn County, Indiana (southeast corner of the state along the Ohio River). Farmers Retreat where William’s family lived is about 12 miles southwest of Aurora where H. F.’s family lived.

When cousin Kenneth Klinkerman died in Higginsville in 2013, I compiled a more detailed trace of the Klinkerman family for Ken's family. The file can be downloaded from
http://www.concordia-memories.org/files/WKlinkermanTrace.pdf

It lists the many moves of Wiliam Klinkerman and his family and continues with a trace of son Albert Klinkerman's family.
