In the previous posting, it was concluded that Laura Brackmann Kappelmann was the daughter of Heinrich Peter (commonly known as H. P.) Brackmann and Charlotte Frerking. Charlotte’s history can be found in Loberta Runge’s Frerking Family Histor. She is listed as the daughter of Georg “Wilhelm” (a.k.a. William) Frerking, although there is some question about this association. Tracing the family of Henry P. revealed a few inconsistencies from previously published data.

Henry’s death can be found in the St. Paul’s Church records as 12 Aug 1908 and his tombstone in the St. Paul’s Cemetery lists his birth and death as 1833 - 1908. See H. P. Brackmann Tombstone. The grave marker also lists his Civil War service in Company A (Beckers), 71st Regiment (Boonville Battalion), Missouri Militia (Home Guards).

The last on-line record found for Henry was in the 1900 Freedom Township census (page 125, entry 8) where he is listed with his second wife Maria (born in Germany Dec 1837), sons Edward and Arthur (born in Missouri Aug 1873 and Feb 1879 respectively) and granddaughter Annie Meyer (born in Missouri Nov 1884). Henry is listed as being born Nov 1833 in Germany and married to Marie for 19 years (i.e. in 1881, the year after his first wife Charlotte died). He also declared that he immigrated to the U.S. in 1843 and that Maria immigrated in 1847. [H. P.’s listing is next to my grandparents Henry F. and Mary (Kappelmann) Frerking.]

The earliest on-line record that was found for Henry was that of his immigration to the U. S. There are no passenger lists from 1843 that include a Henry Brackmann. However, the excerpt below from the manifest for the voyage of the General Washington that arrived at New Orleans on Nov. 24, 1845 includes a “Heinr Brackman”. [Note. This is the same voyage on which most of the Frerking family came to America.] He is listed as an 11 year old from Isernhagen, Germany. Isernhagen is a village just north of the city of Hannover about 20 miles south east of Esperke from where other Brackmann families that settled in the Concordia area came. So it is not clear if Heinrich was related to them. A child that young would normally be traveling with a parent or relative. Because there were no other Brackman(n)s on this voyage, he would appear to be an orphan. But what is also unusual is that orphans normally would be cared for by relatives back in Germany until they were confirmed (at about 13 or 14 years of age). The 30 year old farmer listed directly above his name in the passenger list, Heinr, Klages, may have been a relative or friend. Heinrich Peter. should have been well acquainted with the Frerking family from the trip on the Gen. Washington.

After arriving in America, Heinrich Peter soon migrated to Concordia. In the 1850 Freedom County census (entry 1321), he is listed as a 16 year old in the George and Mary Brackmann household. St. Paul’s church records show that he married Charlotte Frerking on Oct. 6, 1859. The 1860 census records then show Henry (29) and Charlotte (18) living next to William Frerking. [Note. The birth and family of Charlotte is somewhat of a mystery. Loberta’s compilation does not list her birth date, simply that she was the daughter of Georg “Wilhelm” Frerking and born in Concordia. The 1860 census lists her as 18 years old (born about 1842 or late 1841) and born in MO. This would make Charlotte about the right age to be married legally in 1859. There are several factors which might suggest that Charlotte was the daughter of Georg Wilhelm Frerking: the trip together on the Gen. Washington and that Henry P. and Charlotte lived next to William in 1860. However, the census records consistently list Charlotte’s birthplace as Missouri during 1841-2. This was before Georg Wilhelm came to America and she does not show up in the passenger list for the family. The St. Paul’s Church baptismal records list a Charlotte Maria Frerking being baptized on Dec. 19, 1841. The only married Frerking living in the area at that time was Friedrich Frerking. Loberta lists two other daughters of Friedrich with the same first name; Charlotte born Feb. 17, 1843 and Charlotte “Christine” born Mar. 3, 1846. In the baptismal records, there was no Frerking child listed in 1843, only Charlotte Maria in 1841 and Charlotte Christine in 1846. Therefore, one would like to conclude that Henry Peter’s wife was the daughter of Friedrich Frerking. Unfortunately, in the 1850 census entry for Friedrich, the only daughters listed are “Charlette’ (age 7, i.e. born 1843), “Christene” (age 4, i.e. born 1846), and Louise (2 mo.). So the mystery is still unresolved.]

In the 1870 census, Henry (38) and Charlotte (28) are listed with their first five children, William (9), Joseph (8), Fritz (6), Christine (4), and Mary (1). Again, Charlotte is listed as born in Missouri. The 1880 census lists the household as Henry P (46), sons George W (19), Joseph W (17), Edward (10), Lewis (8), and Gustavus (6), daughter Laura (4), and servant Christine Frerking (21). Christine Frerking was a cousin of Charlotte. Wife Charlotte had died Apr. 1, 1880. Three of the children had died between the 1870 and 1880 censuses. Daughter Christine had died at age 6 in 1872 as well as a 3 month old daughter Rosine born that same year. Daughter Maria Hulda had died at age 4 in 1873. Son Fritz was working for E. F. Ninas in 1880.

H. P. then married Maria Schweinebart Walters, widow of William Walters, the following spring after his wife Charlotte died. (See marriage record below.) Even though the St. Paul’s Church records indicate that the Walter family attended St. Paul’s, the marriage does not show up in its records. Rev. Carl Kautz, who performed the wedding ceremony, was pastor of Bethel Evangelical Church in Concordia.

The St. Paul’s Church records indicate that William Walter had died on May 8, 1872. The 1880 East Freedom Township census shows that the Walter family was living east of Concordia next to a number of Brackmann households (Louis, G. F.. and Henry W.). So Mary was well acquainted with the Brackmann families.

As can be seen in the second passenger listing below, an 8 year old Maria Schweinebart and her family immigrated to the U.S. on the ship Columbus that arrived in New Orleans on 21 Feb. 1846 (not 1847). The family was from Rodewald (near Esperke) and listed their destination as St. Louis. It has not been determined when and where Maria married William Walter. However, St. Louis church records indicate that her younger sister Sophia was married in a Lutheran church there on Dec. 16, 1864.

The information from the 1900 census was cited above. Finally, St. Paul’s records show that Henry P. Brackmann died on Aug. 11, 1908 and Marie Schweinebart Brackmann died on Mar. 30, 1909.

Received the following email from Ingo Brockmann in Germany:

Hi Roger,

I figured today out, where Georg (Peter) Heinrich Brackmann was born. His real name was Georg Heinrich Brackmann not Peter. He has several siblings in the US. I'm not sure with his stepmom Wilhelmine Dierking... but the other things are proofed. By the way in the family the name Brauckmann/Brackmann/Brockmann changed sometimes also in Germany...

Info to Georg (P) Heinrich Brackmann

Family members/ Siblings/ illeg. kids (also a bunch of his father siblings moved to US).

[There was also an attached image of what appears to be a church baptismal record.]
