The Marriage Books page of this website contains index files for early marriages in Lafayette County and a few surrounding areas. These indexes contain the names of the bride and groom along with the date of the marriage. However, you may be interested in marriages that occurred in other parts of Missouri or would like to see a copy of the actual marriage license.
A more complete collection of microfilmed marriage records for all counties in Missouri can be found at the following location: Complete set of Missouri marriage records. This link provides access to files containing all microfilm images. It includes not only the index files, but also images of all marriage licenses and records. The images are stored in date order and broken up into files containing a range of dates or names. However, the files on this website are not indexed to make searching by name possible. (Websites with paid subscriptions, like ancestry.com, do provide this facility.) To find the actual image of a license or record for a particular person, one must browse through one of the files.
You must know the county where the marriage occurred and select that county from the first page that is displayed. If you do not know the date of the marriage, you can then go to the appropriate index file and search for the name of the groom or bride to find the date. Knowing the date, you can then select the file containing either the licenses or records for that year or year range. This will display the images on the microfilm by paging to the correct date knowing that they are stored in date order. (It similar to scrolling through a film on a reader, except that the page is selected by clicking on the arrows on either side of the image number box at the top of the page. (Or you can enter a page number in the box. If the date is near the end of the file, that can save a lot of clicking.)
When you find the image, you can download it from that page. If the download arrow doesn’t work, right click on the image and choose “Save Image As..”. |
