Many of you may remember the Stuenkel homestead that stood for many years on the northeast corner of early Concordia, directly east of St. Paul’s College and south of Shady Rest. (When the property was eventually sold to the school, the house was demolished to make room for Krueger Hall.) It was originally the home of Conrad and Marie Gerberding Stuenkel. It then passed down to Conrad’s son Louis and wife Sophie Bruns Stuenkel (when my grandmother Marie Stuenkel Pape was born there) and then to Louis’ son Edward and wife Martha Holsten Stuenkel.
My aunt Anna Pape (Dieckhoff) would often visit her cousins there. She admired the white picket fence around the home and was particularly fascinated by the mason jars that hung on top of the pickets, glistening in the afternoon sun. One day Anna asked her mother why the jars were on the fence. Were they there for decoration? “No, no;” Grandma replied. “That’s how Aunt Martha airs out her sauerkraut jars.”
