Some of you have probably read Concordia, Missouri: A Heritage Preserved, a collection of essays edited by Adolf E. Schroeder who is a noted German historian at the University of Missouri. (If you haven't seen it, click on the title above to download a copy.) Schroeder had published several other papers about Concordia. This publication was sponsored by the Concordia Area Heritage Society and the advisory committee included several local residents. It contains the following - Survival of German Customs and Traditions in Concordia by Adolf E. Schroeder, Textile Production in Concordia by Laurel E. Wilson, The Low German Dialect of Concordia by William D. Keel, and The Low German Dialect: A Church Service by Rev. Alfred W. Rodewald.

While the information contained in Schroeder’s essay is quite good, not all of it is relevant to Concordia. In particular, there is a description of marriage customs with the photo of a wedding party that seemed strange to me. I recently read a book entitled German Settlement in Missouri: New Lands, Old Ways by Robyn Burnett and Ken Luebbering that included the identical photo. This book attributes the photo to the wedding party of Bertha and Oscar Voskamp who were married at Trinity Lutheran Church in Freistatt, MO. So it appears that Freistatt had some customs different from Concordia.
