Old church records are very helpful when tracing the history of a family, including where they lived and the property they owned. With the records I had available, I did a cursory trace of the migration of my Pape ancestors in Germany. The file can be downloaded from Pape Family Migration.
Several things were discovered in the process. My Pape ancestors lived in the Boitzenborstel/Meinstedt/Heeslingen area of Germany for many years; however, the first record of any Pape there was the 1682 marriage of Gerd Pape to Anna Bredehoeft. He apparently moved to the Heeslingen area at that time. There are indications that he was born in Selsingen, Germany where a number of Pape families lived. Note that several Pape families immigrated to the Concordia, MO area from Selsingen, so there may be a very distant connections between the families.
I was aware of the Pape farm at Nr. 12 Meinstedt that is owned by my second cousin (once removed) and assumed that it had been in the Pape family for many generations. However, records indicate that that property was acquired by my great-grandfather in the 1850s. The ancestors had lived in several other areas before that time. |
