Reading old newspaper articles is not only informative, but sometime quite entertaining. One such article was found in the February 09, 1886 issue of the Sedalia Weekly Bazoo. It involves Rev. Herman Philip Wille, the second pastor of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Emma, and his attempts to marry off son George to Emma Rodenburg. As the story goes young Emma was about to inherit a sizeable sum of money and Rev. Wille engaged in some questionable efforts to have his son marry her. Even the name of Prof. Andrew Baepler from St. Paul’s College was brought into the controversy. [Note. The newspaper retracted Prof. Baepler’s involvement.]

According to the 125th anniversary booklet of Holy Cross Church, Rev. H. P. Wille was pastor of that congregation from 1874 to 1886. He was also instrumental in the formation of Immanual Lutheran Church, Sweet Springs, MO. What is interesting is that he accepted a call to a church in Geneseo, Illinois on July 25, 1886 just months after this controversy erupted. Perhaps this was a reason for his move. After serving at Geneseo for five years, he moved on to Indiana where he was pastor at several other churches, primarily at Whiting, IN. According to his biography in the Encyclopedia of Genealogy and Biography of Lake County, Indiana, he was well respected leader at those latter congregations. So he probably learned a lesson from his exploits in Emma.

You might enjoy reading the newspaper account about him in Emma, MO. If nothing else, it is a good example of the style of journalism used in the papers of that day.
