Google Maps provides tools for displaying map information on a person’s own website, such as the plat map overlays on the Maps page of this website. In order to use these features, one accesses an Application Programming Interface (API) provided by Google. However, users are warned that the design of the interface is subject to change.

Google is currently in the process of changing to a new version of this API (v.3). As a result, some of the controls that were provided on the plat map display are obsolete (deprecated in their terminology). So, if you have tried to use this page recently, you will notice that some important controls are no longer functioning. In particular, the slider control for changing the opacity of the plat overlay has disappeared. The re-centering control no longer works and the check boxes for Wiki and Photos will not add these features.

It will be necessary for me to recode the page to bring those features back. Please bear with me until I get this done. Perhaps this will provide the opportunity to add some new features.

As noted above, the new release of Google Maps (v.3) required a rewrite of some of the code for the Map Overlays page. Several features seen on the previous version of the page had to be changed or eliminated. However, this rewrite allowed me to clean up the code a bit. The new version appears to be more stable and a little more responsive.

The following fixes were implemented -

First of all, the opacity slider was restored so one can again essentially turn an overlay off or increase the intensity of the overlay to make it easier to view.

Since the reset in the center of the direction arrows is no longer available, a Home button was added to restore the display to the original setting (i.e. centered at the I-70 junction at a reasonable zoom level).

Wiki and YouTube markers are no longer supported in Google Maps, so the check boxes for them were eliminated. This left only the Photos markers. The check box was replaced with a button to toggle the Panoramio photos on and off.

Entering StreetView has been simplified. Instead of the link to it at the top of the window, one can simply drag the little yellow man standing on top of the zoom bar to any part of the map where you want Street View to start and maneuver from there. It should be pointed out that Street View only works in areas that were photographed by the Google camera vans. (You can see which areas can be viewed from the blue lines that show up on the map when the yellow man is dragged over them.) Fortunately, the streets of Concordia and its immediate area were well covered.

Try the ‘new look’. I think you’ll find it a bit easier to use. If there are any problems or you have any suggestions to improve the page, be sure to let me know.
