The 1886 Sanborn map of downtown Concordia (see below) shows a case of unusual city planning. For some unexplained reason, the railroad company decided to build its original depot in the middle of Schiller (Main) St. Perhaps they thought it would be the central attraction for the city.

People traveling down Schiller had to circle around the building. Apparently they became unhappy with this placement. In 1895, the depot was rebuilt several hundred feet to the west (the location that most of us remember) where it then stood for many years until it was finally dismantled.
