After John Henry Kappelmann moved from Franklin County to Lafayette County west of Concordia, MO, he would often refer to himself as the “postmaster of Boeuf Creek”. Checking with people in Franklin County, there was some doubt as to whether there ever was a Boeuf Creek post office. However the entries posted below were found by scanning the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA); Washington, D.C.; Record of Appointment of Postmasters, 1832-Sept. 30, 1971; Roll #: 71; Archive Publication #: M841. So there was a post office by that name recognized by the Post Office Department. Note that this document is a register of people appointed to run post offices, not necessarily Presidential appointments and Senate confirmations.

John Henry Kappelmann replaced William Wolf as postmaster on 27 Jul 1861. In this appointment, John Henry is simply listed as “Henry”; while the 22 Nov 1862 entry lists his name as “John H.” He switched his given names occasionally. In his 1861 marriage to Catherine Elisabeth, he used the name Henry. Later, in the 1876 Missouri census records, he is listed as John H.

This register does not list when postmasters resigned; however, the second posting shows that Henry W. Cordis took over the position on 28 Jan 1872. That was six years before John Henry moved his family to Concordia, MO.

Henry Cordis died 7 Dec., 1878 and was buried in Detmold, MO. He was replaced as postmaster by Stephen H Voltman on 30 Dec 1978. Succeeding pages in the register list the following postmasters: Diederich Schwentker (1884), Louis H Schroeder (1894); Henry W Kappelmann (1899), Fritz W Panhorst (1900), Herman H Wehrs (1900), Edmond L Rohlfing (1902), and Benjamin F Lagemann (1912). The register indicates that the Boeuf Creek post office was closed Feb. 15, 1915 and moved to New Haven.

Based on this information, my guess is that the post office was located in the store in Detmold, MO. (There is no separate entry for a post office with the name of Detmold.)
