Yesterday (Apr. 2, 2012) was a big day for genealogists when the National Archives began releasing the 1940 U. S. Census records. Initially, the images of these records were posted for only five states, namely Colorado, Delaware, Kansas, Oregon, and Virginia. The rest of the records will be released incrementally as time permits.

Those of us from the Concordia area are obviously interested in the Missouri census, so we will have to wait a bit. However, a number of families from the area moved to Kansas and can be found in the records that are already posted on-line. For example, several Stuenkel families moved to Palmer, Washington County, KS. Others moved to Lincoln County, KS to such communities as Sylvan Grove. So descendants of these families can be found in those areas.

Note that the initial release of the census records is in image format only. Since these are handwritten records, they cannot be searched directly with various search engines like Google. However, a large number of volunteers have started indexing these files so that within months one will be able to located families by name through websites like Family Search. In the mean time, you can scroll through the image files that are posted on-line to try to find a family. Go to https://www.familysearch.org/1940census/1940-census-kansas/ and enter in the county and town name. If you enter Washington and Palmer, it will bring up two links in Sherman Township. Click on either of these links and start paging through the records. You will find some familiar names, like Bergmann, Dankenbrink, Dierking, Lange, Meyer, Oehlschlager, Reith, Stelljes, and Stuenkel. Some of the older people list their birthplace as Missouri. Others may list Nebraska, where some families went first before moving to Kansas.

I gave the wrong impression about the release of the census records in the posting above. Actually, the National Archives has released all 1940 census records on April 2. The files put on-line for indexing are being posted a few states at a time. As of today, ten states are now available on the FamilySearch website.

If you want to see the records for Lafayette County, MO, go to the NARA website at http://1940census.archives.gov/search/?search.census_year=1940&search.city=&search.county=Lafayette%20County&search.page=2&search.result_type=image&search.state=MO&search.street=#searchby=location&searchmode=browse&year=1940 and scroll down to the appropriate Enumeration District (ED). The city of Concordia is ED 54-20, the area north and east of Concordia is ED 54-21, and the area southwest of Concordia is ED 54-21. When you click on the ‘View ED …’, you will see an option at the upper right of the page to download the files to your computer. Note that their on-line viewer displays a very expanded view of the pages by default. You will probably want to adjust the display magnification of your browser to scroll around in a page. (Use Ctrl and - to reduce the magnification and Ctrl and + to expand it again.)
