Jim Reith sent me a copy of a bedtime prayer in Plattduetsch that his grandfather Fritz Reith gave to Pastor Heilman, who printed it in one of the Sunday bulletins during the mid 1930s.
The image of the original prayer is posted below and the following is Jim's translation:
I am so tired, I don’t know what (to do?)
Close my two eyes shut.
Dear Father, I beg you to
Take me into your care.
If today I’ve done some wrong,
Don’t, dear God, look at it (regard it)
Since your grace and Christ’s blood
Make all my wrongs good.
My relatives and my friends
Who are nearby or distant
Guard in the castle or the hut
All persons great or small.
All sick people give Your strength
All tears (please) wipe away
Let the quiet whitish moon
Stand as a light in Heaven.
So much of this is in German vernacular, I’m not sure I have it done nicely. A more competent person very likely could do the prayer justice. [Jim's comment]
