Many of us remember Pastor Oscar Heilman as the stern and gruff old man from our confirmation classes with him. However, during World War II, he took a special interest in all the members of St. Paul’s that were serving in the military.

A cousin of mine sent me a copy of a special bulletin that he mailed to all the soldiers at that time. She found it among some papers from my uncle Elmer Pape that were returned from Italy. Click on the following link to see it.--> Heilman bulletin.

It is interesting how many soldiers with whom he corresponded. After reading the bulletin, I had a little different perspective of him.
