Reviewing some of the old census records, I was surprised at the number of families from the Concordia area that moved to Kansas. After all, residents of Missouri and Kansas were not on the best of terms with each other after the Civil War to put it mildly. Probably those that moved found farmland more affordable farther West.

Although Kansas was only 60 miles away, I only visited Kansas once in the years that I lived in Concordia (ignoring occasional trips across the line into Kansas City, KS to pick up building materials). I had that one opportunity when Uncle Bill invited me to travel there with his family. LaVerne had just graduated from CMSC and they took her to Garnett, KS to interview for a job.

LaVerne accepted a position in the school there. One her first day, the superintendent gave her a talk about the proper conduct for young teachers. He told her to be discrete as to whom she dated; not just any young man like “some service station attendant”. LaVerne was very offended by that comment since her father operated the Standard Oil station on old Highway 40 back in Concordia.

LaVerne wound up marrying a lawyer. I’ll refrain from any lawyer jokes, Orville.
