This picture was taken in the fall of 1922. It shows grades 1-4 of the Blackburn Public School. The index identifies about 2/3 of the students (note Orville Pape next to Edwin Schlue) as well as their teacher, Miss Natalie Dowden.

Seeing names like Rehkop, Tieman, Kirkhoff, and Eckhoff, there must be relatives of some of the children in this picture still living in the area. The name that obviously caught my eye was Orville Pape. The August H. Pape family lived just south of Blackburn. The youngest son was Orville, born about 1915. August F. Pape lived a few miles farther south, next to the Frizzell farm. He may have be a son of August H. Several other Pape names show up in the Saline County census records from 1900-1920, namely Fritz and John. To my knowledge, none of them are related to my family.
