This forum was started as a place to consolidate information/pictures about German localities from which the early settlers of Concordia came. Almost all of them came from the lowlands of north Germany (low German), now known as Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen). As detailed in a posting below, most of them came from one of three areas; the central part of the province of Hanover just a little west and north of the city of Hannover, the northern part of the province Hanover between Bremen and Hamburg, or Westphalia on the western border of Hanover. Those from Westphalia liked to call themselves Prussians, probably to distinguish themselves from the more numerous Hanovarians. In census and other records they would often list their place of origin as Prussia, whereas, those from Hanover simply called themselves German. If in the Concordia area census records you see someone listing his/her or the parents birth place as Prussia they most likely came from Wesphalia not the eastern Germany portion of Prussia.
If you are trying to trace your ancestors to Germany, read the next topic in this category. There are also several postings in the general category later that give some suggestions about reading German.
More and more people are taking vacation trips to Europe, some of them to the old country of their ancestors. It would be useful if you posted photos and experiences of your visit there. This would be helpful for future visitors. In order to post information you must be registered on this messageboard. For more information about registering see the home page of this website.
I hope that a number of you will post some interesting information. It's simple and fun! |
