How many of you have read or heard the quotation posted below? It is often attributed to Eleanor Roosevelt; however, she did not originate the quote. She would simply have been trying to apply it to some situation. A number of other people, such as Adm. Hymon Rickover, have used the same words. The author has not been clearly identified, although some feel that it originated from the writings or discussions of Henry Thomas Buckle. (See http://quoteinvestigator.com/2014/11/18/great-minds/)
As always, statements can be ambiguous (and sometimes misapplied). It is difficult to know what a person was thinking when she or he said the quote without knowing the context. There seems to be no record of when or where Eleanor would have made that statement. (Some question whether she even said it.)
Whatever the history, it make one ponder where a genealogist fits in this categorization. I hope not in the third group. However, at times I might want to apply the quote to the mindless chatter on Twitter and other social media. |
