As noted in earlier postings, Jacob Pape arrived in the U. S. as a teenage orphan with a wooden trunk containing his meager belongings. A picture of that trunk is repeated below. He apparently had built the trunk shortly before he left Germany and painted his destination on it. Besides his personal clothing, the trunk contained only two other items. One was a bolt of linen cloth that his mother wove and probably gave to him as a dowry. The other was his confirmation certificate. Why did he carry his confirmation certificate with him? It included his birth date, so it could be used in place of a birth certificate. He probably showed it to the immigration officials when he arrived at Castle Garden in New York City to identify himself to them. Jacob was eager to fit in at his new home. A family story relates that he asked them how his name was pronounced in English. When they told him it was P”ay”pe, he then said “I'm in America now. So my name is now Pāpe.” [Not the German pronunciation of P”ah”p”ay”.] However later, when living in Concordia and speaking low German with his friends and family, he would revert back to the German pronunciation.

A picture of his framed confirmation certificate is shown below. A transcription and translation of it is as follows.

Erinnerung an den Tag der Confirmation
Remembrance of the day of confirmation

[Etching of Jesus at the Garden of Gethsemene
by C. Bertling(?)]

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If any one loves the world, love for the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the pride of life, is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world passes away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides for ever.
(1 John 2:15-17)

Shall I now, as your goodness' has already appeared to me,
Leave you, Son of God, and serve sin?
With the lusts of this time defiling me
And no longer taste the sweetness of your love?
(German hymn by Balthasar Münter 1735-1793)
