Note the clipping below from the December 12, 1893 issue of The Sedalia Weekly Bazoo. (Sedalia, Mo.)

Does anyone know whom she may have been?

Yes there was a paper published in Sedalia, MO by the name of Bazoo. (See the header below.)

The Bazoo was published between 1868 and 1904 by J. West Goodwin. For most of its life it was published weekly, every Tuesday. However, for a period of time from 1873 to 1881, there was also a Sunday morning edition and apparently also a daily publication between 1869 and 1881.

In addition to the typical local news, the paper also liked to print unusual events and interesting stories. That’s what sold papers. They covered the Concordia area sporadically and liked to refer to the people of Concordia as “our German friends”.

The Library of Congress “Chronicling America’ project is slowly publishing old newspapers on-line and the Sedalia Bazoo is one that they have posted. If you go to their website at http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/. you will see that their collection includes most of the issues between 1877 and 1893. These issued can be searched using the search feature at the top of the window (use the Advanced Search tab). Note however that these are scanned images which have been indexed using Optical Character Recognition (OCR). The recognition rate for older print is usually not that good, so a search on particular names and places may not always find an article even if it is in one of the issues. But you can give it a try and hopefully have some luck. Experimenting with some of the advanced search features may improve your chances of finding something.
