Bill Cordes recently sent me some of his Cordes family information. His great-grandfather Henry Hinrich Cordes was one of the patriarchs of the Cordes families in the Concordia area. Their history also illustrates one of a number of connections between families in Concordia and those in the Cole Camp/Stover area. The following is a brief history of that family.
The trace begins with the Johann Hinrich and Cathrina Mahnken Cordes family back in Wilstedt, Germany. Wilstedt is in the Stade district of northern Germany (Province of Hanover) between Bremen and Hamburg. Johann and Cathrina had at least five children: Margaret (“Gretie”) b. 1840, Henry Hinrich b. 1844, Catherine b. 1846, Harm. b. abt. 1849, and Anna b. abt. 1855. The family emigrated from Wilstedt in 1858 arriving in New Orleans on Nov. 15, 1858 on board the E. F. Gabain. [Note. This same voyage included a large number of people from Westphalia, i.e. Borgholzhausen, Barthausen, Kleekamp, Casum, etc., most of whom said they were going to St. Louis.]
In the passenger manifest, Johann Hinrich declared that the family’s destination was Morgan County, MO. Since many of the early settlers in Benton and Morgan County area (Cole Camp/Stover) came from the Stade district of Germany, it is probable that they knew some of the other people there. Based on the 1860 census records, Johann Hinrich and family settled on a farm in Flat Creek Township of Pettis County, MO, about 10 miles north of Cole Camp.
According to Pettis County records, son Henry Hinrich was married to Martha Meta Wolters on 5 Apr 1867 by a pastor from Lake Creek German Methodist Church. Meta’s family lived in the Concordia area. So in the 1870 census we see Henry Heinrich and Meta had moved to Lafayette County living in Davis Township with their 2 year old daughter Catherine (or Katherina). The 1870 census records are the first to contain any Cordes members in Lafayette Co. So they may have been the first Cordes family to arrive in the Concordia area. Those same records include a 28 year old Fritz Cordes, a 35 year old Henry Cordes, and a 28 year old Henry Cordes living in Freedom Township; however, all three of them were single and listed as laborers living with other families.
Because federal census records are only available in 10 year intervals, it is difficult to determine if Henry Hinrich Cordes remained in the Concordia area from that point on. His first son George Johann Heinrich was born in Concordia later that year on Sept. 6, 1870, but some records indicate that the second son, Johann H., was born in Adair Co., MO on Aug. 18, 1872. The next son, Henrich Herman, was born in Concordia on Mar. 8, 1875. The 1877 plat map of Lafayette Co. (see http://concordia-memories.org/maps/oldmaps.html) shows the family living just north of Davis Creek next to the Wolters farm. After that time they had three more children, Herman William born Nov. 17, 1877, Anna Maria Katherine born Apr. 3, 1880, and Martha Maria Meta born Mar. 5, 1882.
The church affiliation of the family is unclear. Recall that Henry Hinrich and Meta were married in a Pettis County Methodist church before moving to Concordia. Records indicate that their fourth son, Herman William, was baptized at Zoar Methodist Church in Concordia on Feb. 15, 1878; however, the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church records show a Hermann and Anna being confirmed in the 1893 class at St. Paul’s and Martha confirmed in the 1896 class. The ages are consistent for that family. All of the children were married in St. Paul’s Church.
The history of Henry Hinrich and Meta’s children continue as follows. Oldest daughter Catherine died as a young girl in 1876.
George Johann Heinrich married Katherine Pape (not a relative of mine) on Feb. 22, 1895. She had immigrated to the U.S. as a single girl in 1892. They had nine children; Bertha Anna Meta, Erna Marie Christina, Emilie Martha Rebekka, Martha Eleanora, Arthur Johann Heinrich, Lena, stillborn girl, Magdalene Mathilde, and Loretta Emma.
Johann H. married Christine Holsten on Apr. 24, 1898. They had four children; Lydia Dorothea Meta, Walter Heinrich Claus, Edwin Johann, and Johann Martin.
Henrich Herman married Eleanor Schnakenberg on Oct. 30, 1904. They had five children; Hulda Meta Katherina, Wilhelm George Klaus, Irene Maria Martha, Melvin Johann Heinrich Martin, and Elmer Herman John.
Herman William married Emilie Bergmann on Sept. 7, 1902. They moved to Kansas City and had three children there; Gertrude Emily, Hubert Martin, and Edward Herman.
Anna Maria Katherine married Wilhelm Eckhoff on Oct. 11, 1903 and lived in Emma. They had four children; Lydia Meta Sophie, Arthur Johann, Hildegard Adelheid Cath. Martha, and Walther Johann Christoph.
Martha Maria Meta married Wilhelm Holsten on Oct. 23, 1904. They had five children; Caroline Meta Dorothea, a stillborn son, Theodore Klaus, Edna C., and Lorna Eleonore Martha. |
