The Frerking Family History has now been posted in two different formats. One is the original version by Loberta Runge and the other is Gary Frerking’s reorganized listing. Loberta’s version contains additional material, such as church records of early family members and other anecdotal information. This file consists of scanned images of the pages of her original document.

One of the nice features of Gary Frerking’s version of the Frerking Family History is the index at the end. Each name that appears in the listing is indexed by page number. This makes it much easier to find a particular name than doing a search operation on the document and sifting through all occurances of a given surname. However, this requires one to find the name in the index and then scroll back to the page on which it is listed. To simplify the process, I have added some links in the latest version of the document posted on this website. Sections of the index have been bookmarked alphabetically and the names and page numbers in the index have been linked to the corresponding pages. So to find a particular person, use the bookmarks to go to the appropriate section of the index and then click on the name (or page number if the name appears on more than one page). The display will then jump to the page in the document where the person appears.

Both Gary and Loberta’s documents are descendancy reports. but in slightly different formats. Numbering of the names keeps all of the families organized but in a different order. Gary’s version lists names in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly (NGSQ) system format. Starting with the earliest generation, it list names grouped by each successive generation, i.e. all people in the second generation, followed by all people in the third generation, and so on. The main disadvantage of this format is that if you want to follow a particularly family line, you have to skip down a number of pages to see the children in the next generation. On the other hand, Loberta’s version uses a form of the register system which follows a particular family branch until the end, then backs up and follows the next branch, and so on.

Note that in Gary’s NGSQ format, each name that has a + sign in front of its Roman numeral has a family grouping with that number further down in the list. To aid in the navigation of family branches, the numbers with a + sign have been linked to the pages on which the next generation of the family group appears. So, if you click on that number, the display will jump to the page on which that group is listed in the next generation.

If you have previously downloaded the Gary Frerking version of the Frerking Family History, you might want to download the new version. It will save you some time paging through the document.

The latest version of Gary's Frerking Family History also has backward links. For any given entry, you can click on the parent's name (i.e. the first name in parenthesis after a name) to jump back to the family listing for the previous generation. (You can only jump back on level at a time.) This will allow you to find not only the person's parents but also any brothers and/or sisters.

I might note that, because children are numbered sequentially, close family relations are listed adjacent to each other in a given generation. The ancestor list (in parenthesis after the name) also makes it relatively easy to determine relationships.

For example, starting with a given name, back up one generation. Then, look at the families listed directly before or after the family group. If the last name is the same and the parent listed first in parenthesis is the same, the children in the two families are first cousins and you can see their aunts and uncles. On the other hand, if the first parent is different but the second ancestor is the same, the children are second cousins, and so on.
