The most difficult branch of my family tree to trace has been that of my maternal grandmother, i.e. Marie (nee Kappelman) Frerking. In the previous posting, I was able to trace my great-grandfather Henry (a.k.a. John Henry) Kappelman’s family back to the Borgholzhausen area of Westphalia, Germany. After a little more digging, I think I have traced Great-Grandmother Catherine Kappelman’s family back to that same area, namely the village of Barthausen. This is only about 3 miles from the village of Casum, where Henry was born. A detailed description of this trace has been posted on the website in the following writeup, Catherine Kappelman Records.

The break-through came when I was able to borrow a microfilm copy of the Borgholzhausen church records at a local LDS Family History Center. In addition, the passenger list for the ship on which they immigrated to the US was also located and family groupings in the various censuses appear to support the trace. As often occurs when tracking a family, there are some name and date inconsistencies in the various records. The following summarizes what was found.

Anne Marie “Catherine” Kappelmann was born May 25, 1841 in Barthausen, Westphalia, Germany to Heinrich Wilhelm and Marie Elisabeth (nee Nollkämper) Kappelmann. The family emigrated from Germany on the SS Herman arriving in New Orleans on Nov. 16, 1853. They settled in Franklin County, MO (Beouf Creek area) where Catherine married Henry Kappelmann on Nov. 6, 1861. Henry, Catherine and children moved to Concordia, MO in 1878 where the family lived on a farm west of Concordia until she died on Oct. 29, 1920
