If you have ancestors that bought land from the government, you can find copies of the land patent documents on the Bureau of Land Management website. (Note that a link to the BLM site is also provided on the ‘Sources’ and 'Maps' pages of this website.) By entering the state (e.g. Missouri) and the county (optional) along with the last name of your ancestor, you will obtain a list of these documents, if any exist. However, you need to know the spelling of the name as recorded on the document. Also, when some German names with umlauts were transcribed, the umlaut may have been dropped. For example, one must enter ‘Stunkel’ rather than ‘Stuenkel’.

Those of you that have used this site in the past will notice that it has been modified and significantly upgraded. The listing of documents includes much of the information from the patent, including the township, range, and section numbers along with the aliquots (fractional parts of the section). Clicking on the Accession number or Image icon brings up a page with more detail. The new page has three tabs.

- The Patent Detail tab shows all of the information about the land in an organized manner. It also provides a map to show where the property is located. Click on a box in the Land Descriptions section on the right side and it will draw a outline of that area on the Google Maps window. (Note. It may not show the fraction of a section, but simply the entire section.) You can switch to the satellite view, zoom in, and see the current overhead photography for that area. If you are not familiar with PLSS notation, see Understanding PLSS Land Descriptions.

- The Patent Image tab downloads a pdf copy of the document. Keep in mind that the date on the document is when it was filed in Washington, not when the land was actually purchased. Sometimes there was a two to three year lag in this filing. Also the president’s name on the document (which is not his actual signature) was that of the incumbent at the time it was filed.

- The Related Documents tab is interesting in that it shows additional information that was not previously provided on the website. The ‘Patents’ portion lists the land patents for all of the adjacent land. So you can determine whether that person purchased adjoining land in another transaction or who the neighboring land owners were.

When you enter the website at the link provided above, you will see a second tab to ‘Search Documents By Location’. Switching to this tab will allow you to find out who initially purchased a particular piece of land, like the land you own. If you have a deed with the township, range, and section listed, that can be entered to perform the search. The alternative is to use the map on the right side. Drag the map to center it on the location for which you want information and zoom in enough so that you can pinpoint the area. With your cursor over that area, right click on it and select ‘Get land description’. That will automatically fill in the information need for the search. That's the fun way to do it; otherwise, you can simply type in an address in the box above the map and press the 'Map Address' button. That will fill in the necessary fields and show the section outline on the map.

The ‘Survey’ and ‘LSR’ (Land Survey Report) parts of this site cannot be used for the Concordia area because they do not have this type of information on file for Missouri.

Once you locate a land grant for someone using the instructions above, you can then view the location of that grant on Google Maps. To do this, click on the ‘Accession’ number (second column in the list). At the bottom of the page that pops up, you will see a map. Click in the Map box at the left of the line that lists the location of the grant. This will display shaded areas on the map showing the township and sections where the grant is located,

The aliquots (subdivision of the section, e.g. NW¼SW¼) are not plotted so you will have to estimate what portion of the section that is. You can expand the map using the slider on the left side and drag the map to the highlighted area. Detailed road are displayed at an expanded scale to help locate the grant.

As an example, if you view the land grant issued to Conrad 'Stunkel' on 5/1/1843. you will see that it was the NW quarter of the SW quarter of Section 33 in Township 49N, Range 24W. This is the 40 acres just west of present day Route 23 and north of Old Highway 40. Conrad later deeded this land to his brother Fritz Stuenkel.
