The descendants of Jacob Pape held a reunion in Concordia, Missouri during the weekend of Sept. 9-12, 2010 in conjunction with the Concordia Fall Festival and Sesquicentennial celebration. Twelve of the thirteen surviving grandchildren were able to attend. They were Murray Pape, Pueblo, CO and Alida Pape Worm, Wichita, KS from the Arthur Pape clan; Donald Pape, Ft. Wayne, IN, Roger Pape, Liverpool, NY and Mary Pape Krueger, Monroe, MI from the Edwin Pape clan; Myrna Pape Olson, Concordia, MO, Shirley Pape Ziegelbein, Concordia, MO and Carol Pape Schlueter, Concordia, MO from the Louis Pape clan; Dorothy Dieckhoff Paul, Houghton, MI, Philip Dieckhoff, Elizabethtown, KY, Robert Dieckhoff, Mount Vernon, MO and Thomas Dieckhoff, Pierce City, MO from the Anna Pape Dieckhoff clan. Spouses and a number of children and grandchildren also attended.

A large number of old photos, letters, and other memorabilia were brought by the various relatives for display during the get-together. One of the highlights was the trunk that Grandfather Jacob used when he emigrated to the U.S., including his framed confirmation certificate that he had in it. (This was brought by Tom Dieckhoff.) Another was a quilt made by Alida Worm chronicling the history of the Arthur Pape family through their years in Oklahoma and Texas.

On Saturday, there was a presentation of the Jacob Pape family history tracing his ancestors in the Heeslingen/Meinstedt area of Hannover, Germany back to 1480. His journey to the U.S as a young orphaned teenager was then covered. The presentation also included the history of the Stuenkel and Bruns ancestors in early Concordia. For those relatives who were not there, the following links to the presentation notes (0.38Mb) and a voice recording, part 1 (66Mb) & part 2 (31.5Mb) of the gathering are available for download. (Note that the recording is split into two parts to fit on two audio CDs.) Photos and videos used in the presentation can be viewed and downloaded from the flickr website.

The get-together continued with a luncheon at the home of Myrna and Wendell Olson and a chance to view Wendell’s “art park” and museum. The reception included a celebration of Murray and Shirleen's 60th wedding anniversary. Finally, the day concluded with a visit to Heidelberg Gardens and a opportunity to watch the parades and sesquicentennial pageant. Other photos from the reunion can be accessed at the 2010 Pape Reunion collection on the flickr website. Instructions for navigating the flickr website are posted in the User Guides forum.

A video entitled 'The Bredehoeft Family Roots' prepared by Angela Bredehoeft Flauss contains scenes of the Heeslingen/Meinstedt area of Germany. When viewing the clip of Meinstedt in that video, it was discovered that there was a shot of the Klaus Pape farm at the 4:00 min mark of the DVD. (See clip below.) The members of the Klaus Pape family are cousins of the Jacob Pape descendants. There is an older house behind the newer house that was thought to be the childhood home of our grandfather Jacob Pape. However, Christina Pape sent a picture of the early Pape homestead taken in the winter of 1952/3. (Second picture.) She noted that the old house had been renovated through the years but was finally demolished in 1972 to make room for a newer home.

At our recent reunion, I was informed that the family pronunciation of the name Claus was Klôs (as in claws), not Klous (as in house). Checking back in the family tree, I noticed that our early relatives living in the 1500s with that given name spelled the name Clawes, such as Clawes Bredehövet, Clawes Möller, and others. In the 1600s, the spelling generally changed to Clauß, and eventually to Claus. In more recent years, the spelling of Klaus seems to be more prevalent. I am beginning to think that the “Claws” pronunciation may be a Low German form; whereas the “Klous” pronunciation may be High German (where au is pronounced as ou in English).

But then I am reminded that the pronunciation of a person’s name is what he or she chooses. Our grandfather decided that in America our surname should be pronounced Pāp (as in paper) while other families chose to retain the German pronunciation of “Pahʹpay”.

Sometimes pronunciations may even vary within a given family. Among my friends in Schenectady, NY were the Pieper brothers. Willie called himself “Peeper” but brother Carl called himself “Piper”. We always referred to them as the “Peeper/Piper” brothers.

Some of you should remember the short guy with a cloud over his head in the “Li'l Abner” comic strip. His name was spelled Joe Btfsplk, but Al Capp once said his name was Joe Smith. He was making the point that it’s not how one spells his name, but what he says it is.
